How do announcements work: pinned, categories, expiry, and why one disappeared

Why some announcements sit at the top with a border, what the coloured category means, why one vanished, and why you got an email for some but not others.

Announcements are your community's notice board, available on the Announcements screen in the app and on the web. What you see there — and what lands in your inbox — is decided by a few settings the office chooses for each announcement.

What you see, and in what order

  • You only see announcements whose publish date has passed and that have not expired.
  • Pinned announcements come first, marked with a pin icon and a highlighted border. Everything else follows, newest first.
  • Each one carries a category badge: General, Maintenance, Events, Safety, Rules (short for Rules & Policies) or Emergency. Safety, Maintenance and Events have their own colours so they stand out.
  • The time shows how long ago it was published. Twenty announcements fit on a page; use Previous and Next for older ones.

Why an announcement disappeared

  • The office set an expiry date and it has passed. Expired announcements drop off the list automatically.
  • The office deleted it.
  • It has not appeared yet — an announcement can be scheduled for a future publish date.

The “unread announcements” chip on your home screen counts announcements that are currently live in your community, not the ones you have personally opened, so it will not drop to zero as you read.

Why you got an email for one but not another

Each announcement is sent through the channels the office ticks for it, filtered by your own preferences:

  • An in-app notification is always created when the office chooses to notify.
  • Email, text or push go out only if the office ticked that channel and your Announcement preference allows it.
  • Texts also require that you have opted in to text messages. A text carries the title and the first 140 characters.
  • Push and in-app notifications show a preview of about 200 characters; the email carries the full text. Open the app for the full announcement.
  • If you have two homes, you receive one copy, using the preferences of your primary home.

Good to know

  • Turning off the Announcement toggle for a channel stops routine notices on that channel, but the announcement itself still appears in the list.
  • Emergency alerts are a separate feature with their own Acknowledge step, not an announcement category.
