I received a violation notice: what do the statuses mean, and how do I appeal?

What each violation and fine status means, who sees a violation recorded against your unit, how tiered fines work, and how the one-time appeal works.

Last updated

If your community records a violation against you, you are notified with “A <type> violation has been recorded” on the channels you allow for Violations. The detail lives on the web at app.maximum.community under Violations. This article explains what you will see there and how an appeal works.

What the Violations page shows

  • Violations recorded against you personally, or against any unit in your household, twenty to a page.
  • Each card shows the type, date, description and, if fines exist, “X of Y paid”.
  • Expand a card for Fine Details — amount, due date, status and amount paid — and Your Appeals with the decision and any review notes.

Violation statuses

A violation moves through Observed, Warning sent, Fine issued, then either Appealed leading to Appeal approved or Appeal denied, and finally Paid or Collections. Each fine has its own status: Pending, Partial, Paid, Overdue or Waived.

How fines are calculated

Fines are tiered per violation type: the first, second and third occurrence of the same type on the same unit carry different amounts set by your community. Issuing a fine moves the violation to Fine issued. Payments are recorded by the office against the fine — there is no in-app payment step, so pay the way your community tells you and the office will mark it.

Submit an appeal

  1. Open the violation and tap Submit Appeal.
  2. Write your Appeal Reason — it is required — and submit.

The violation's status changes to Appealed. Three rules apply:

  • The button appears on violations of a type your community allows to be appealed, at Warning sent or Fine issued. You can appeal after a warning or after a fine — you do not have to wait for a fine.
  • You get one appeal per violation. Once it exists, the button disappears.
  • The office reviews it once and records approved or denied with notes. If approved, every pending fine on that violation is waived.

Good to know

  • You are notified only when you are the named resident. A violation logged against your unit with no named person still appears on your page but does not send a notification.
  • Violations is a web page; the iPhone app does not include it.
